How do you keep your treasured recipes?
Well, I have been trying to think of a way in which I can gather my recipes in a nice way. I guess it is a little hobby at this time. So far I have put them in a binder in a variety of sleeves and album pages organized according to sections. People have given me recipes, I have cards, some double sided, some clippings from magazines, etc. Anyways, just wondering how people keep them. In a box? I suspect there are many people who have treasured recipes passed down from one generation to the next and I was just intrigued as to what you all do with your recipes.
In a time where we are rushed for time and eat out or order take out at an alarming rate (businesses love it of course) I have been thinking about making more interesting and different kinds of recipes so we are not just thinking quick, easy, boring and then think “take out!”. Of course I still fiddle with the recipes to make them more to my liking, but it is nice to have a motivational starting point. I love my cook books, but have started this project because I am tired of them piling up. My Mom’s book is in nasty shape and I was thinking of re-writing it. Just in an old dirty Hilory notebook which she re writes ever so often. Hence I got the hand-me-down. *smiles* I am not into the scrap booking thing and making them all pretty, though I think that is really cool.
Now this is all work - buying whole foods, deciding what to cook and actually preparing something, but I think it is worth the effort. So, I want to make this nice and practical so that I actually use it. Not sure if a big album is the right fit for me. Well it is a work in progress!
I noticed something, there are loads of recipes out there and though many look appealing like I want to look at them and maybe make them, I just do not see myself doing it, like I once would have, in a heart beat. I like the healthier choices, but still I have to pick my faves for special occasions.
Anyways, a different kind of a blog for me. Curious what you do…. Hope things are going well. I myself must have worked some new muscles because my muscles are so sore! Take care *hugs*
i have hear of people creating cookbooks that are more like journals - you know a pretty book where you write the recipes and even some more. a friend of mine did this actually. for me, i have them all stuffed on a shelf and in a box. not so pretty…
heard not hear - oops!
What a great blog.
I have so many recipes and tons of cookbooks and too want to do something with mine.
It would be a big job I think to compile them all neatly and organize them but a job I would thoroughly enjoy but I just have to figure out exactly how to do that.
I look forward to hearing what other people do.
Have a great evening

Lori
I did the same sort of thing. I had gotten so many recipes that one day I sat down for a few hours and typed them all out. I got a binder and slipped them in the plastic cover. I only have the recipes in there that I know I will and have used. I keep it in the kitchen. All my cook books are on a bookshelf. Good luck with getting organized!
MISSION ORGANIZATION! Love it!
I collect interesting cookbooks. Usually find them in antique stores and places like that. Not really for the recipes, but more for the stories that might go behind a certain recipe or culture… those types of cookbooks.
My treasured recipes handed down from generation to generation. I have to be honest and say that they are in a complete mess. LOL Stuffed in a folder that is so bulging that I have to take it out of the cubbard with both hands. It seems I always find what I need though. Weird. I have started typing my recipes into a Word folder on the computer and saved in folders by category on there. But I still hang on the written down version of my treasured ones. Some my grandmother hand wrote, or a great friend, or my mom or sister. A lot of them are tattered and stained up with the ingredients that they called for. I don’t know… a certain comfort in seeing them when it’s a special occasion and I pull them out. Computer is a great way to save and keep organized, but there is something so “sterile” about it. LOL
Scrapbooking has always intrigued me, but I do not have the time, or the patience I suppose, for it. There was a time in my life that that kind of thing would have appealed to me and been fun, but with busy life now, I’ve gotten a little bit away from my creative side. Food for thought there… maybe I should get some of that oomph back, or strive for it anyway. It would be a great stress reliever right now.
Big huggggggggggggggs,
Shan
I so need to do that. Mine are in a box, and I can never find them. So then I end up making the same things. I need to get busy! Thanks for giving me the idea!

Hey beautiful lady, I wish I could help you, but given that I am not a cook and I don’t use recipes….well…I’m not very much help! On the flip side of that, is the fact that I have been cooking more at home…so in due time, I may have a recipe. I look forward to the ideas other buddies give you!! So how have you been my dearest?
Unfortunately, I don’t have any treasured recipes handed down through my family, because my mother went all health nut (I should have followed her down that path!) and “lost” any yum-yum recipes my grammy might have given her.
However, I have started a recipe book of my own filled with WW recipes and others that I’ve lightened up (I’ll admit to having some not-so-healthy ones in there too). I also keep mine in a binder with notes and comments either written to the side or on cute stickies. To me, they’re just more accessible in a binder.
Funny you should ask. I have collected recipes for years, and as my focus shifted from one area to a healthier one, I go through my recipe box at regular intervals and throw out some and alter others. I am able to keep my wooden recipe box on my countertop, close to my stove. I copy my favorite recipes on index cards. But I try the recipes several times before I commit to index cards. I love having recipes at my fingertips for menu planning. I don’t keep anything I will not use regularily. Decluttered Marge. I must have a little of my sis’s OCD. Love, Marge
